Job Summary
The Senior Electrical Engineer is a key member of the engineering team that performs the design of electrical substations for hybrid power plants including a combination of conventional generation sources such as gas turbines used in temporary and peaking power, gen sets, grid scale BESS, PV, and others. This individual will possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills, strong experience in utility power systems, and strong commitment to integrity and compliance. She/he must have excellent project management skills, exhibiting the ability to have a priority of safety first, teamwork, diversity and continuous improvement through strong coordination with other professional engineering personnel requiring independent action and decision.
Essential Functions / Responsibilities:
• Specifying electrical substation equipment
• Conducting review and analysis of short circuit and protection coordination studies
• Developing electrical engineering designs focusing on the physical layout
• Performing electrical design on lightning, insulation coordination, grounding systems, battery sizing, ampacity studies, and AC/DC station service
• Developing substation configuration schemes and designing interconnections with utility's substations
• Developing and implementing electrical equipment control schemes for power plants following practices and accepted standards
• Conducting and reviewing analytical studies on electrical power engineering proposals, to develop/modify electrical systems using engineering principles
• Applying extensive knowledge to improving power plant equipment reliability and leading root cause failure analysis
• Preparing project specifications and bill of materials
• Implementation and construction of projects
• Performing electrical equipment testing using Megger, Omicron and other recognized brand name manufacturers
• Activities may include project planning - estimating, contract scope definition, management of third party engineering services and EPC contractors
• Familiarity with National and International standards (IEEE, ANSI, IEC, etc.)
Requirements:
• Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in design of electrical power systems and or electrical project management.
• Experience with utility grid interconnection permitting and energizing process for large generators, including contracting, designing, testing, and commissioning
• Experience with system studies and resolution of adverse grid conditions
• Experience in all aspects of electrical power systems design - high voltage, power flow, protection & control schemes, voltage regulation, short circuit current mitigation, electrical load analysis, etc.
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineer from an accredited four-year engineering program is required.
Additional Proficiencies Preferred:
• Knowledge of common electrical control systems schematics.
• Practical experience with CAD software.
• Experience with modeling of energy storage systems for ancillary services and arbitrage opportunities in multiple power markets
• Experience with both utility scale front of the meter and behind the meter or microgrid applications of power generation
Travel Requirements:
25-50% domestic and/or international travel likely
Addtional remarks about traveling: Travel required as needed until project completion (45 to 60 days continuous to be expected)
Working Conditions:
May require working both inside an office environment & outside with exposure to changing climate conditions.
May be required to work beyond normal business hours
