Position Description:
The Business Intelligence department is responsible for enabling the Enterprise Data & Analytics Strategy across the organization. In doing so, it provides unified approaches, tools & standards encompassing all facets of Seaspan’s data management and data consumption. Business Intelligence works collaboratively with the lines of business and corporate functions in rolling out the data transformation program across the organization.
Reporting to the Director, Business Intelligence, the Data Governance Lead (DG Lead) will drive the alignment of data management practices with Seaspan’s strategic objectives and support the delivery of measurable business outcomes through data-driven decision-making.
The role will develop, implement, and oversee Seaspan's data governance framework and will be responsible for ensuring data integrity, quality, privacy, and compliance across all business units. The DG Lead plays a facilitative role in providing guidance, advice, and direction on all matters related to the business-driven data governance program. As the advocate for data governance at Seaspan, the DG Lead must be a strong communicator and collaborator who can align data initiatives with business goals and regulatory requirements.
Job Responsibilities:
- Lead the enterprise-wide data governance framework in alignment with the business strategy, including policies, standards, and procedures.
- Collaborate with business and technical stakeholders to drive change management and embed governance practices into daily operations and project lifecycles.
- Champion data governance initiatives and serve as a change agent to promote a culture of data accountability and informed decision-making.
- Define and implement data ownership and stewardship roles and operating model across all lines of business and corporate functions and develop positive collaborative relationships with all Data Stewards.
- Support in establishing Data Governance related committees and coordinate all activities, actions, and decisions ensuring appropriate documentation of actions and decisions.
- Collaborate with business and IT leaders to establish data quality metrics, privacy protocols and compliance standards, and resolve data-related issues.
- Define data quality KPIs across engineering design, build, procurement, and lifecycle management.
- Establish and identify Critical Data Elements by working closely with the business.
- Champion the use of metadata, data lineage, and cataloging tools to support transparency and decision-making.
- Support the successful implementation and integration of data management tools.
- Partner with technical teams to ensure data architecture supports governance goals, including integration and reporting capabilities.
- Collaborate with IT and data teams to ensure governance is embedded in system architectures and digital initiatives.
- Lead and develop corporate-wide data stewardship and governance training programs to promote data literacy and to ensure organization-wide understanding and consistent adoption of data standards, policies, roles, and responsibilities.
- Monitor regulatory and privacy developments to ensure compliance; recommend actions to address gaps.
- Provide subject matter expertise and strategic guidance to support the ongoing advancement and improvement of Seaspan’s data maturity.
- Establish and support the usage of the company business glossary.
- Stay up to date with leading data management practices.
Requirements:
- Minimum 7 years’ experience in data governance and data management, including experience developing and implementing data governance programs
- Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in IT, Data Management, Data Science, or a related field
- Strong understanding of data governance frameworks, information architecture, related tools, and best practices
- Experience in data management (DG), business glossary (metadata) and data quality (assessment methodologies and data profiling)
- Experience working in both a technical and business context; able to translate technical concepts into easy-to-understand business language.
- Familiarity with data privacy regulations and compliance standards
- Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills, including effect communication at senior levels
- Ability to lead change initiatives to build a data ownership culture
- Strategic thinking, systems orientation, and root-cause analysis
- Entrepreneurial, negotiation & influencing skills; stakeholder engagement.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
- Nice to have: Professional certifications such as CDMP (Certified Data Management Professional), DGSP (Data Governance & Stewardship Professional), or equivalent
Job Demands and/or Physical Requirements:
- As Seaspan is a global company, occasional work outside of regular office hours may be required
Compensation and Benefits package:
Seaspan’s total compensation is based on our pay-for-performance philosophy that rewards team members who deliver on and demonstrate our high-performance culture. The hiring range for this position is $110,000 - $137,000 CAD per annum. The exact base salary offered will be commensurate with the incumbent’s experience, job-related skills and knowledge, and internal pay equity. In addition to base salary, we offer a competitive total rewards package which includes an annual performance-based bonus, a comprehensive benefits package (extended health, dental, life and disability insurance), retirement savings plan matching and other company-provided rewards.
