Fleet Manager

Position Description:

The Fleet Manager leads a team of Senior Vessel Managers, Vessel Managers, Marine Managers, Technical Coordinators and administrative personnel and helps ensure they manage their assigned vessels and direct reports safely, reliably, and economically. The position monitors all aspects of technical management, financial, and operational reporting for the their group of ships, and prepares daily ship performance updates for the Vice President, Fleet Management / General Manager, Hong Kong to ensure that the company takes proper management decisions and actions to safeguard its business and people. The position also performs backup duties for the Senior Vessel Managers as required. This position liaises with other departments to support the vessel operations. 


Job Responsibilities:

  • Is familiar with the Health, Safety, Environmental Protection and Quality Policy (PL-005), and understands the responsibilities under the Environmental Management System (EMS).  In keeping with this and other compliance policies, they understand their duty to report any environmental noncompliance and/or concern to their manager or members of the senior management team (including the highest level of management) either directly or through the open reporting system as per Management System guidelines 
  • To collaborate with all the stakeholders to ensure fleet management team is fully ready & support the LNG Transition plan.
  • Actively support and participate in various asset development and decarbonization plans. 
  • Work with the Team to prepare the vessels for docking including budget and CAPEX considerations 
  • Strives to effectively manage vessels to ensure they operate safely with minimum offline time 
  • Prepares detailed budgets and ensures budgets are met; also prepares regular reports including, but not limited to, management, budgetary and technical reports. Ensure that all reporting employees adhere to company policies and procedures 
  • Communicates expectations to direct reports, manages performance, and provides leadership and support to team members  
  • Provides briefings, technical assistance, and holds regular fleet team meetings 
  • Oversees purchasing and vessel monitoring to detect performance, breakdown and purchase-efficiency trends and opportunities 
  • Works with other fleet managers and the Marine Standards team to control OPEX, improve fleet performance, and exemplify maritime resource management values throughout the operation teams 
  • Ensures that English, the company’s working language, is used in the office and on board company vessels 
  • Ensures that all reporting personnel adhere to company policies and procedures  
  • Treat safety and environmental compliance as a top priority 
  • Provides full supervision management services to the company for the fleet team and assigned vessels under his control, including the safe and prudent operation of seagoing vessels, and both onboard and on shore emergency preparedness 
  • Ensures vessels comply with ISM and company standards, and with flag state, classification society, and other mandatory international and local regulations 
  • In order to align with company goals, the Fleet Manager works closely with his team to achieve operational objectives. Responsible for Department Goals and providing the team direction for achieving them. Also oversees individual goals for his teammates 



  • Minimum five years’ experience in a similar technical or management 
  • Able to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment  
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite  
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and good writing style 
  • Strong technical skills 
  • Understanding and experience with ISO/ISM Management Systems 


Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working with container ships engaged in international trade 
  • Able to lead meetings, make presentations, participate in negotiations, coordinate emergency responses, and guide Senior Vessel Managers 


Job Demands and/or Physical Requirements:

  • Regular international travel is required and may be on short notice 
  • Must have mobility to conduct vessel inspections  
  • Will be required to carry a mobile device and check regularly outside of office hours   
  • Must maintain home internet connection for work outside of office hours 


Compensation and Benefits package: 

Seaspan’s total compensation is based on our pay-for-performance philosophy that rewards team members who deliver on and demonstrate our high-performance culture. The hiring range for this position is $140,600 - $175,800 CAD per annum. The exact base salary offered will be commensurate with the incumbent’s experience, job-related skills and knowledge, and internal pay equity. In addition to base salary, we offer a competitive total rewards package which includes an annual performance-based bonus, a comprehensive benefits package (extended health, dental, life and disability insurance), retirement savings plan matching and other company-provided rewards.
