Intern - Accounting

Position Description:

The Intermediate Accountant is responsible for recording, reporting, and analyzing the financial and operational results of the Seaspan group of companies. The position contributes to working papers and participates in other projects as needed.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Reviews incoming invoices within the invoice management system for accuracy and completeness and also ensures compliance with company policies and procedures
  • Provides excellent customer service to vendors and internal stakeholders regarding all aspects of the accounts payable process
  • Verifies vendor account information by reconciling monthly statements and related transactions
  • Reconciles and analyzes accounts with appropriate working papers and supporting documentation
  • Prepares adjustments resulting from the account reconciliation and analysis
  • Reviews month-end journals entered by other accountants 
  • Evaluates and assesses reasonableness of critical general ledger accounts on a monthly basis
  • Prepares monthly working papers
  • Provides monthly variance analysis against prior periods and budget
  • Coordinates the processing of and accounting for new build vessel deliveries and dry-docked vessels 
  • May help prepare and compile reports for the senior management and Board of Directors
  • May help prepare financial statement notes and related public company disclosures
  • Support the Controllership and Finance Operations departments with ad hoc requests
  • Performs other duties as required


Requirements:

  • Diploma in business/management accounting from a recognized institution
  • One year of experience working in a similar role within the accounting
  • Strong knowledge of account reconciliations, including resolution of reconciling items 
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel) 
  • Familiar with financial systems software (e.g., NetSuite). Strong verbal and written communication skills, and good writing style
  • Attention to detail
  • Enjoys working with numbers with a high degree of accuracy and is comfortable with large spreadsheets
  • Ability to work under pressure with strict deadlines
