Manager, Fleet Engineering (Machinery)



Position Description:

The Manager, Fleet Engineering is responsible for researching, developing and implementing various engineering and technology projects for the operating fleet and newbuilds as part of the Fleet Engineering function, with particular focus on assets regular and strategic development. This position will also be responsible for the technical management of the plan approval process of assigned projects, for fleet technical support, as well as rule and regulatory research.



Job Responsibilities:

  • Is familiar with the Health, Safety, Environmental Protection and Quality Policy (PL-005) and understands the responsibilities under the Environmental Management System (EMS).  In keeping with this and other compliance policies, they understand their duty to report any environmental noncompliance and/or concern to their manager or members of the senior management team (including the highest level of management) either directly or through the open reporting system as per Management System guidelines.
  • Responsible for technical research into solutions to comply with upcoming environmental regulations and liaises with cross functional departments on the implementation of these solutions onto vessels and the wider Seaspan organization.
  • Responsible for day-to-day management and execution of various engineering and technology projects, and for the planning, control, and reporting of same, including budgets.
  • Provides project management in line with company Project Management policy and supports the fleet modifications and retrofit programs, such as:
    • Hydrodynamic upgrades
    • Main Engine upgrades
    • Energy saving and Thermal saving upgrades, etc.
  • Responsible for the strategic research and development of software and systems required to reflect modifications brought on-board company’s ships.
  • Coordinates with external stakeholders in obtaining relevant quotations and assists with the development of contracts and specifications.
  • Research assigned technical issues relating to the current fleet, newbuilds and future vessels and performs functional assessment of the ships’ equipment.
  • Supports the process of Ship Building Specification development, its approval and performs negotiations with shipbuilding yards as required to meet the objectives specifically set by the company.
  • Conducts plan approval for newbuilds and manages the technical developments and implementations as related with the assigned projects; raises any concerns for review and discussion to ensure company objectives are met in the development and expansion of the fleet for immediate and future operation.
  • Post-deliveries from shipyards, assists with vessel Guarantee Claims and ensures the liaison with shipyards after sales and design departments, with Classification Societies and eventual manufacturers for rectification of claims.
  • Maintains current knowledge of technology changes. Schedules meetings with third party vendors; attends conferences and other offsite workshops that are relevant to technology and fleet performance management.
  • Maintains professional relationships as well as official and non-official communications with fellow managers, external stakeholders, and team members.
  • Monitors the products and performance of manufacturers that provide equipment and services to our fleet, as well as the publications to keep current with industry trends and concerns.
  • Performs when required vessel inspections for assessing the condition of operation, maintenance, or safety, supervises the rectifications and issues and disseminates reports on the findings and recommendations.
  • Responds to technical and general queries and deals with issues regarding day-to-day operations of all the vessels in the Seaspan fleet; supports for failures troubleshooting and ensures liaison with manufacturers and/or shipbuilders for technical assistance or service attendances.
  • Performs other duties as required.

















  • Marine mechanical engineering certification
  • Shipboard work experience in a technical role
  • Work experience in shipbuilding yards
  • PMP certification
  • Minimum 3 years shore management experience including experience in project management
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel)
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD (Autodesk) programs
  • Able to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment, good conflict resolution skills and work well within a team
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, and good writing style, and effective personal presentation style
  • Sound organizational and prioritization skills
  • Strong analytical skills



Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working with container ships
  • Professional recognition as a Chartered Engineer or Professional Engineer



Job Demands and/or Physical Requirements:

  • Willing and able to perform public speaking duties in the presentation of findings
  • Regular international travel is required and may be on short notice
  • Will be required to carry a mobile phone and check regularly outside of office hours 
  • Must maintain home internet connection for work outside of office hours
  • Periodic overtime to meet deadlines or accommodate time zone differences
