Position Description:

Over 90% of accidents are attributed to human factors. However, IMO and shipping companies have not sufficiently addressed this to help seafarers understand their limitations and implement safeguards. The Manager, Human Factors & Safety Culture

 is responsible for enhancing the safety and performance of our 5,000+ crew members by integrating human factors principles. This role focuses on communication, training, empowerment, and leadership to foster a culture that embraces human factors in daily operations, thereby preventing incidents, improving behavioral safety, and strengthening teamwork

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Be a strong advocate for Seaspan’s Safety Culture and ensure that it is fully understood and imbedded in daily actions across our fleet.
  • Design and maintain a training schedule to ensure Human Factors training is conducted fleet-wide at least quarterly  
  • Collaborate with the Director Marine Standards to develop, update, and promote comprehensive Human Factors training content, emphasizing the "Dirty Dozen." 
  • Review crew experience and training backgrounds to assess preparedness and awareness of Seaspan culture.
  • Assist the Director Marine Standards in analyzing human factor lapses in significant incidents.
  • Maintain accurate training records in Compass.
  • Engage in frequent communication with seafarers to raise awareness and enhance understanding of Human Factors principles.
  • Support the Director Marine Standards in implementing life coaching for seafarers.
  • Continuously improve the Safety Management System (SMS) by integrating best practices in safety and human factors.
  • Work with Fleet Personnel to provide specialized Human Factors training for newly appointed senior officers.
  • Analyze crew behavior through near-miss reports, intervening as needed to ensure adherence to health and safety protocols.
  • Ensure that behavioural analysis is an integral part of incident investigations.
  • Research and adapt Human Factors best practices from other industries to enhance workplace safety and performance.
  • Encourage crew members to take ownership of safety, emphasizing it as a shared responsibility.
  • Reinforce the open-door policy and encourage crew members to voice safety concerns without fear of reprisal.
  • Ensure clear and consistent safety messaging through briefings, posters, newsletters, and other media.
  • Promote active participation in safety meetings, feedback sessions, and safety committees.
  • Conduct Human Factors training for office staff under the leadership of the Director Marine Standards.
  • Utilize observations, near misses, and unsafe acts/conditions to assess crew behavior in safety-critical situations.
  • Collect and analyze behavioral data to identify trends, risks, and areas for improvement.
  • Initiate safety system improvements based on crew feedback and keep them informed about changes.
  • Collaborate with the training department to provide ongoing education, refresher courses, and updates on safety regulations.
  • Work with the Fleet Management- and Fleet Personnel Teams to address onboard behavioral challenges and implement mitigating measures.
  • Perform other duties as required.

 

Requirements:

  • Extensive maritime industry experience, particularly with seafarers is strongly preferred. 
  • Senior sailing experience as Master or Chief Engineer is advantageous.
  • Strong understanding of human factors and their impact on safety.
  • Passion for delivering training and engaging seafarers in Human Factors principles.
  • Knowledge of ISM Code, ISPS, SOLAS, MLC, MARPOL, STCW, ISO 9001, 14001, 45001.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to analyze data and implement safety improvements.
  • Experience in training development and implementation, particularly in safety and operational procedures.
  • Proactive approach to research and continuous safety management improvement.

Job demands and/or physical requirements:

  • Availability after office hours via a company-supplied mobile phone when required.
  • Travel required for ship visits, training, incident investigations, and audits.

 

Compensation and Benefits package: 

Seaspan’s total compensation is based on our pay-for-performance philosophy that rewards team members who deliver on and demonstrate our high-performance culture. The hiring range for this position is $115,000 - $135,000 CAD per annum. The exact base salary offered will be commensurate with the incumbent’s experience, job-related skills and knowledge, and internal pay equity. In addition to base salary, we offer a competitive total rewards package which includes an annual performance-based bonus, a comprehensive benefits package (extended health, dental, life and disability insurance), retirement savings plan matching and other company-provided rewards.
