Position Description: The Personnel Manager is responsible for the effective staffing of assigned vessels in compliance with Flag, Class, and other mandatory or prescribed requirements as they relate to fleet personnel This position works with other departments to ensure competency, supports engagement and retention of sea staff, and manages assigned fleet personnel group of shore employees.  

Job Responsibilities:  

  • Is familiar with the Health, Safety, Environmental Protection and Quality Policy (PL-005), and understands the responsibilities under the Environmental Management System (EMS).  In keeping with this and other compliance policies, they understand their duty to report any environmental noncompliance and/or concern to their manager or members of the senior management team (including the highest level of management) either directly or through the open reporting system as per Management System guidelines 

  • Works with the Global Talent Acquisition (GTA) team to select qualified and highly competent officers (and crew) for the company’s vessels. Conducts selection interviews and advises the GTA Manager of staffing needs  

  • Approves assignment of officers to vessels as recommended by the team’s planners.  Oversees onboarding and sign-off of ship staff and manages any issues or exceptions to company policy regarding ship assignment 

  • Develops strong working relationships with officers. Evaluates and reports on ship personnel and resolves or brings forward any disciplinary/performance issues for assigned vesselsConducts briefings and de-briefings 

  • In cooperation with the Vessel/Fleet Managers, addresses concerns and grievances of ship staff on assigned vessels. Monitors emails and ensures timely response to communication received from vessels and officers on leave 

  • Supports the Seaspan Management System and ensures compliance and that non-conformities are addressed and appropriate action taken 

  • Identifies training needs of ship staff, assesses, and makes recommendations regarding promotion, and participates in Officer Forums and roadshows 

  • Communicates expectations to direct reports, manages performance and provides leadership and support to team members 

  • Works with Fleet Team, TrainingMarine Services, Financial Reporting and other teams to ensure deliverables are met and provides guidance and support 

  • Performs other duties as required  

Requirements: 

  • External candidates must have sailing experience as a Master or Chief Engineer with a minimum of two years’ shore-based experience or five years as a Crew Manager or similar 

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (including Outlook, Word, and Excel) 

  • Effective problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills 

  • Sound organizational and planning skills 

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, and good writing style 

Additional Desired Qualifications:  

  • Containership experience with panamax size ships  

  • Familiarity with Seaspan Corporation vessels is an asset 

  • Post-graduate degree or Human Resources professional designation 

  • Understanding and experience with ISO Management 

Job Demands and/or Physical Requirements:  

  • Availability via a Mobile phone outside of office hours 

  • Occasional international travel is required and may be on short notice 

  • Must maintain home internet connection for work outside of office hours
