The Project Manager, Newbuild is responsible for the technical management of the newbuilding projects and their design part execution within budget and contractual timelines. This position will also be responsible for monitoring the guarantee claims feedback and providing fleet technical support.
Responsibilities:
- Is familiar with the Health, Safety, Environmental Protection and Quality Policy (PL-005) and understands the responsibilities under the Environmental Management System (EMS). In keeping with this and other compliance policies, they understand their duty to report any environmental noncompliance and/or concern to their manager or members of the senior management team (including the highest level of management) either directly or through the open reporting system as per Management System guidelines
- Responsible for day-to-day management and execution of assigned newbuilding projects, within budget and contractual timelines
- Supports the process of Building Specification development and performs negotiations with shipbuilding yards as required to meet the objectives specifically set by the company
- Coordinates the Maker Selection process in liaison with vendors, procurement and fleet managemet., suggests selections and seeks internal approval and communicates the outcome with shipyards
- Coordinates the Specification Clarifications and plan approval process for assigned newbuilding projects and manages the technical developments and implementations in line with the Building Specification, Seaspan standards and governing Rules and Regulations
- Manages the Cost/Credit variations reporting, internal approval and communications with Shipbuilding Yard, maintains records and executes final installment verification
- Ensures in liaison with the Project Manager Newbuilds and Retrofits that the Buyer Supply items are delivered as per shipbuilder productions timelines
- Monitors the processes, maintains statistics and reports on progress on weekly basis or as frequently as needed
- Post-deliveries from shipyards, monitors the fleet vessels’ Guarantee Claims and ensures liaison with shipyards after sales and design departments, with Classification Societies and eventually with the manufacturers for rectification of claims
- Monitors the products and the performance of manufacturers that provide equipment and services to our fleet, as well as the publications to keep current with industry trends and concerns
- Performs when required fleet vessels’ inspections for assessing the condition of operation, maintenance or safety, supervises the rectifications and issues and disseminates reports on the findings and recommendations
- When required, attends manufacturer shop tests and performs supervision to ensure compliance with the approved drawings and plans
- Participates in sea trials and equipment pre-commissioning, commissioning and systems installation supervisions to inspect and confirm that the equipment meets the functional purpose and aligns with Seaspan expectations
- Suggests design alteration for continuous improvement in managing safe operations and long-term operational benefits
- Responds to technical and general queries and deals with issues regarding day-to-day operations of all the vessels in the Seaspan fleet; supports the failures troubleshooting and ensures liaison with manufacturers and/or shipbuilders for technical assistance or service attendances
- Researches assigned technical issues relating to the current fleet, newbuilds and future vessels and performs functional assessment of the ships’ equipmen
- Maintains current knowledge of technology changes; schedules meetings with third party vendors; attends conferences and other offsite workshops that are relevant to technology and fleet performance management
Qualifications:
- Marine engineering certification
- Shipboard work experience in a technical role
- Work experience in shipbuilding yards
- Minimum 3 years shore management experience including experience in project management
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel)
- Proficiency with AutoCAD (Autodesk) programs
- Able to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment, good conflict resolution skills and work well within a team
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, and good writing style, and effective personal presentation style including public speaking
- Sound organizational and prioritization skills
- Strong analytical skill
- Ability to travel internationally with a valid passport on short notice
- Ability to work outside office hours as required
- Experience working with container ships is desired
- Professional accreditation as a Engineer is desirable
- PMP certification is a plus
