Manager, Commercial Operations (12-Month Contract)

Our main operating offices are located in Singapore, Vancouver, Hong Kong, and Mumbai.
The Manager, Commercial Operations supervises daily charter operations on company-managed vessels. This position ensures operational functionality and performs charter-party requirements set out by owners and customers.
This role is a full-time on-site position located in our downtown Vancouver office and will be a 12-month temporary full time engagement.
Job Responsibilities:
- Is familiar with the Health, Safety, Environmental Protection and Quality Policy (PL-005), and understands the responsibilities under the Environmental Management System (EMS). In keeping with this and other compliance policies, they understand their duty to report any environmental noncompliance and/or concern to their manager or members of the senior management team (including the highest level of management) either directly or through the open reporting system as per Management System guidelines
- Monitors charter party obligations of company vessels; when required, stems vessel bunker-stems on approval from his/her manager
- Establishes and maintains a positive working relationship with charterers’ Commercial Operations and/or operations teams while effectively managing risks and Seaspan’s business interests
- Responsible for monitoring vessel, port, and voyage performance KPIs
- Carries out continual risk assessment of vessel operations for potential loss-situations and recommends and assists with mitigation measures
- Supports and briefs vessel masters on charter party obligations, port and voyage performance issues. Is responsible for ensuring that the master understands the requirements, reporting obligations, local contacts and operational structure of the charterer
- Monitors and assists masters e.g. may obtain and analyze vessel commercial reports in support of claims etc., including delays or deviations. This will involve close interaction with various internal departments such as Marine Services and Projects and Technology
- Monitors vessels for potential trading breaches under the charter party and insurance covers; monitors vessel performance through breach transits
- Assists with compiling factual, timely information and documents relating to commercial claims
- Supervision of vessel damages, and ensuring correct, timely recovery of amounts due from Charterers. Close coordination with the accounts receivable department is a requirement
- Oversee the creation of charter parties, fixture notes and addenda with the assistance of the legal department, and overall responsibility for the timely and efficient creation, and management of these documents
- Demonstrates team-work; establishes rapport and maintains effective working relationships within the office and external customers
- Performs duties in accordance with the company Safety Management System (SMS); adheres to ISM and company standards
Requirements:
- Post-secondary degree in relevant field from a recognized institution
- Minimum five years’ experience in chartering, Commercial Operations, or operations management
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills
- Must be able to properly analyze situations, mitigate and manage risk, and determine a suitable course of action as part of problem-solving skills
- Able to negotiate with and influence others, establish rapport and maintain effective working relationships
- Experience in a command role at sea is an asset.
- Containership sector experience is strongly preferred.
- High level of charter party understanding is strongly preferred.
- Occasional international travel is required and may be on short notice
- Availability via mobile device outside of office hours
- Must maintain a home internet connection
Compensation and Benefits Package:
Seaspan’s total compensation is based on our pay-for-performance philosophy that rewards team members who deliver on and demonstrate our high-performance culture. The pay range for this position is expected to be $100,000-$120,000 CAD per annum. The exact base salary offered will be commensurate with the incumbent’s experience, job-related skills and knowledge, and internal pay equity.
